Episode #607 Dr. Linus

Aloha! Welcome to our sixth episode! This is a special podcast because we had our very good friend, Michael Emerson, come by to record with us and give his take on filming "Dr. Linus".

We recorded this episode on November 12, 2009.

Listen here: 607 Dr. Linus

Mario Van Peebles (who directed this epi) brought a disposable camera to set and took pictures with everyone. It was cool because on top of being a great director, we could see he was having fun being a part of the show. Here we are the morning we shot the wakeup scene with one of our writers, Adam Horowitz (left) who was also on set that day.

And here is a pic of Beth after she died in the grave that Ilana made Ben dig:

Poor Beth. Poor Jorge. Who will help you do the podcasts now?

Very cool... I'm looking forward to listening to the podcast tomorrow at work. Stoned or not, you guys do a good job with the podcast... :)

That's hilarious that the vampire line made it into the episode. That was one of my favorite parts second to Ben tossing his shovel in the air and booking it into the jungle.

Hahaha Beth in the grave :D :D

awesome podcast guys. great to hear michael emerson, he seems to be such a cool guy. will you be inviting more cast members? how about ken leung? awesome job geronimo jackson's beard XD oh and the jears jokes (jears = jack's tears) - priceless.

Those are fun set pics. I totally missed Mario Van Peebles' name in the credits. He did a great job!

What iPhone app are you using to do the podcasts from the iPhone?

Cheese curds! Emerson was fantastic in this ep, and you guys did a great job with this podcast. I look forward to the next one!

Loved the podcast and the special guest! Really enjoy "seeing" the script and show from the point of view of the three of you. Love that you now have a Q&A at the beginning. Diggin it in Socal!

Oh man! I was tripping when I saw him digging that grave last night. A few weeks ago, a friend was visiting me here and he's a huge fan, so I took him around to a bunch of known Lost locations, including that one. We managed to get a quick picture of me in the grave:

So awesome! But possibly bad luck.

I liked this one, Beth. Michael Emerson is awesome! Looking forward to more guest stars--not that I don't love you guys!

LOL
Jorge falling asleep DURING scenes? Too funny.

Great discussion about the episode. Michael is a fantastic guest. It was wonderful hearing him expound on his ideas about the show, and laughing at his own statements when they sound absurd.

fyi, Christian never tells Locke has has to die, but rather sort of supports Locke's supposition that he has to die.

Pretty funny inside info about the "dirty" scripts. I noticed last episode you guys were reading script cues and there was a lot of cursing in it too. That's pretty funny. I never thought of stuff like that ever being in there.

Also great to hear your approach to the script, acting, etc. I don't think I've really heard any insights like this into an actor's work procedure before.

Glad to see that "vampire" made it into the final cut :) I think it works well.

I'm wondering if you guys have any ideas on how exactly Hurley knew about Richard not aging? Because on the show, he has never previously met Richard.

Even though Ben has turned a corner, I really hope that Ben is still BEN. He would be pretty boring to watch as Mr. Nice Guy.

I found it kind of hard to accept that Ilana would accept someone into the fold who murdered "the only father figure" she ever had. If nothing else, I can see some friction between Ben, Richard, and Jack down the road.

Great to hear about the props too :-) especially the basket.
I thought the Ilana MacGuiver moment was pretty funny too.

I totally laughed out loud at the vampire line. Love that it was an improvisation! (If you can call it that, since you planned it out in advance.)

Hey, you folks just did your own flashsideways podcast! You went through twice, each time starting the same but with little (variable) differences taking the conversation in new directions.

Genius!

@Jon

We just use the voice memo recorded thing. Super simple.

Jorge, you do a greally great job on the show. My question is in regards to Hurley being an untouchable (not corruptible, cannot be hurt, etc).

If you view The Island as a giant chess game which is being played by both MIB & J-dizzle with various peoples lives, than Hurley is the piece that is not supposed to be in the game. We see examples of this throughout the seasons, most notable in Exodus Part 2 where Hurley has to beg Jenna to let him on the plane after she mentions he just wasn't 'meant' to board this flight. What do you think?

@Josh Yes! T-Shirts! Definitely! I want one too. Love the podcast.

Everyone should rent Mario's movie BAADASSSSS! I just finished watching it with some nice whisky; Mario rocks!!!!! Such a talented guy

Can I get some Hawaiian plant id up in here? What is that dang tree on the beach that has the long thin needle-like leaves?

So that's why he wears guy-liner! Because he's a pirate!

Also, best dialogue yet, in my opinion. Miles': "uh oh!" made me laugh out loud.

Loved the podcast, as always! I could listen to you guys for hours (and at the rate the podcasts are increasing in length, that is probably a good thing!).

Emerson was wonderful. He is a poet when he speaks.

Hey, to raise money for Chile (or whatever your favorite charity) maybe you guys could raffle off a voice mail message or something? You know, like you leave the outgoing message on someone's phone. That would be simple to do, and a fun thing for the fans.

I suggest raffle because then lots of people pay $5 each instead of an auction where ONE person pays a whole boatload.

Just a thought.

Thank you both, again, for sharing your time with your fans!

: ) P

Guys,

I love this podcast! You are all so entertaining to listen to!
This episode reminded me of "Tribute" by Tenacious D and I know exactly what it's like having to redo work because of external hard drives :(

Also, Nov 12 is my birthday so that's awesome, too.

Cheers!

@Josh Cafepress.com

@Beema Christian, MIB, Unlocke, & Smokey are all the same person. So Unlocke told Richard to tell Locke he had to die. Christian then reconfirms this before Locke turns the wheel "that's why it's called a sacrifice"

Loved having Emerson as a guest. LOL @ Jack's tears & getting the vampire line in.

@ Beth I'm also pulling for Hurley to be the next Jacob. But can you just imagine Hurley appearing to people like Jacob does? "Dude... you have to like go to this island and do this time travel thingy. Here's a script of Empire Strikes Back to read during the flight."

I REALLY hope "Libby" is one of your future guests. LOL Maybe even Darlton for the final episode!

Unknown said...

This was my favorite podcast yet! I prefer the post-shoot approach to the script-read approach. And adding in a guest (let alone Michael Emerson) was brilliance.

Kudos all around!

Thanks very much for another great podcast guys.

Excellent idea having guests on with you, especially when its their centric episode.

We don't get to hear Michael or Jorge laugh much on Lost (if at all!) and it's kinda cool to hear them chuckle away :D

Loved the "Vampire" line.

Looking forward to the next one :)

All the best

Hey, man, you guys need different guests. That guy on today's show sounded exactly like Ben Linus. It was too spooky. Very uncomfortable. You guys should be actors becuase you are great on the radio box.

Anonymous said...

Wow! Great behind-the-scenes look, I mean, listen. I love how you discuss the script with Michael and rehearse it and then your improv did really air! Nice! On the show I thought the writers imagined that (and I was expecting something like "Team Edward", like Michael Weatherly / Tony DiNozzo did on NCIS recently).

This was the best episode yet of the final season! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, so intense, so well written... Michael put it perfectly, all the mirroring, connections and the overall storytelling ... A++! (not graded by Arzt)

You guys are awesome! Thanks for your insight and don't let Mac frustrate you. ;-) Keep 'em coming!

Great podcast, great guest. I admire a man who can slip words like 'mellifluous' into a conversation.

Widening Gyre said...

Jorge and SK22, y'all knocked it out of the park with this one. Special guest. Check. New (recurring, I hope) feature where J and guest read lines as other character. Check. Got me to re-watch for the vampire line. Plus super funny line about jack crying in the woods. Check overload!

My only beef--you need to thesaurisize Mr. Emerson. What were those words he was using? Melifluidinmycity? Interstitittywitty? Huh?

Keep up the great work! Such a treat. Thank you.

Erin said...

Longer comment later. For now, I just want to say that Dr. Linus is probably my favorite episode ever. Been waiting so long for Ben's redemption. Glorious.

I love the podcast!!

And about the episode, what's up with Ben digging such a perfect rectangular shaped grave?

This was the first week I actually managed to listen to the podcast, and I LOVED it! Michael Emerson is amazing :) Can't wait to hear next weeks! Thanks for doing this for the fans!

I got mentioned on a podcast! wooohooooo!

Donny Pauling said...

I know you've heard it a million billion times, but it's really cool to hear the actors from the series discuss the series. Thanks, y'all.

Sundeep said...

Ack! How could Michael Emerson dismiss his faceoff scene with Ilana has simply "all that blubbering"!?! That moment transcended television.

Why would he have lowered his weapon at all, if his last line in that speech was a lie?

muiscatron said...

What a great podcast! I am in awe of Michael Emerson. His vocabulary is astounding - it's the first time I have heard "mellifluously" and "germane" on a Lost-related podcast.

Jennifer said...

Awesome podcast. It was awesome that you had Michael Emerson on there too. I loved the insight of all of you together. When I saw the sub I thought it was planning on doing something to the island. I remember when the freighter came he wanted to destroy everyone on the island. Maybe Widmore wants to do that same plan this time? I loved the literary sense of this episode and really hope Ben stays a good guy...Do you think the other characters will have a chance for redemption or have they made their choice?

A couple of questions. Beth, I think its awesome that you get to be so close to the show and help out. I was wondering some things about you. First how did you and Jorge meet? Second, What is your official job on Lost, I know you have appeared as an extra in scenes and a stand in, do you have other roles on the show? Keep up the good work, you guys crack me up.

Jenny from Portland

@jenny - you can actually ask me questions like that here:

The answer to your first question is answered at the top of that page since it seems to be the most asked :)

Definitely my favorite podcast so far! I hope you guys continued to do the podcasts post-shooting instead of after the script reading - all of the insight into filming was really cool to listen to. I really appreciate these podcasts, thanks for taking the time out.

I was wondering though, back in S3, was the Dharma van CGI or did you (Jorge) actually ride the van down the hill with Josh Holloway and Daniel Dae Kim? I remember something about rocks but I can't recall specifically if this was ever discussed. Thanks.

Jennifer said...

Bethany, thanks for the website! The questions were fun to read

Awesome podcast. I look forward to hearing these every week now. WHen Jorge said "If elected I will serve" I cracked up and thought of using Obamicon.me to photoshop a pic of Hurley. Check it out: http://img383.imageshack.us/img383/3177/candidatereyes.png

Hah! Vampire totally made it. Awesome! *high5*
Your podcast is really fascinating. Thanks for doing it.

Cindy said...

Oh! I forgot to mention the drinking game.
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2655925/lost_drinking_game.html
The game includes many parts, to include:
-Only one drink when Hurley says "Dude". (You were right!)
-One drink if Ben Lies.
-Three drinks if Ben tells the truth (but do we ever really know it?).
I've not tried it myself, but I think this one would kill me. :)

I've noticed that your newer recorded segments before and after each show sounded cleaner and crisper than the main part of the podcast, but figured you had just perfected the way you had been doing it all along. Pretty cool that you're just using the phone now. Sounds great!

So, was Jorge REALLY asleep and dreaming during the opening scene of Dr. Linus? :-)

Ah, Jorge added the vampire line! Makes sense! That was awesome.

QUESTION FOR THE PODCAST: If Ilana knows who all the candidates are, at least by last name, why did she and Bram wonder aloud if Frank was a candidate in the Season 5 finale?

Cecil Rose said...

But... Michael Emerson was shown digging a perfectly rectangular grave when he finally got down to it. Just the kind you'd expect am obsessive-compulsive like Ben to dig.

So, was it partially filled in before Beth 'died' or was the grave Ben was digging CGI?

Elena said...

Loved the story on Jorge's addition of the vampire comment. Glad it made it in.

adudas2 said...

Brilliant! I loved the podcast! Hearing you and Emerson talk about playing your characters and the behind the scenes workings of the show was great. Wish you guys had started the podcast earlier in the series.
Jorge - did you tell Nestor you were going to add the "vampire" line?

Erin said...

Such a fantastic podcast, and I just loved listening to Michael Emerson chime in. Man, what an eloquent guy! And the Ilana-Ben "I'll have you" scene was absolutely perfect. Kudos to both actors. Amazing grace indeed. That's so frustrating that the computer froze on you; I've been there more than once, and it makes me want to throw the computer through the window. So glad that he stuck around to re-record! Can't wait for tonight, and anxious to see Ben and Hurley interact with each other - though I wonder if that'll have to wait until next week...

Anonymous said...

Thanks for these great podcasts.
You guys almost make me want to be an actor (almost cuz of lack of my talent hehe) But seriously its the openness of these podcasts and the whole LOST experience that change my view on the series.

Also sidekick22 and Jorge are a good team! ;p

I am way behind on listening to the podcast's since i just recently got hooked up listening to them.
I love seeing/listening to Michael Emerson outside of the show! It cracks me up how "proper like his word speakin" is!
This podcast made me think of two pot heads (which i know, i know, you guys aren't high!) sitting aroudn with their super smart, super cool cannibas smoking english college professor!
